Stephen F. Austin State University 

Academic Programs

The university offers more than 120 concentrations, minors, and majors. You can earn a certificate, bachelor’s, graduate or professional degree.

Housing

The university houses over 5,000 students in their traditional suite and apartment housing. Students may live in Residential Learning Communities to receive mentorship and academic support and be part of a tight-knit community. The school has Residential Learning Communities in topics such as Pre-Nursing, business, education, etc. 

Location

SFA is in east Texas in the city of Nacogdoches. It is about 140 miles from Houston or Dallas. The city has lots of shops, restaurants, and coffee shops. It is a great location for outdoor activities like camping and boating. The city also hosts several festivals throughout the year.

Academic Programs

Housing

You can live on campus in apartment-style housing. They are fully furnished and have a full kitchen, a common area, and private bathrooms. You can also take the shuttle from the residence hall to campus for a fee. 

Location

UT El Paso is in the sunny college town of El Paso. The city borders Mexico and shares a history and culture that have shaped El Paso. The city has professional teams, great hiking trails, museums, and more.

Academic Programs

You can choose from traditional residence halls or apartment-style housing. The newest residence hall is gender specific and accommodates 396 students. The apartments accommodate 429 and 192 students in the coeducational residence hall.

The main campus is in Edinburgh, one of the four counties comprising the Rio Grande Valley. It is at the southern tip of Texas and borders Mexico. The Rio Grande Valley has one of the lowest cost of living. The area has a diverse geography with beaches, farmland,

Housing

You can choose a special interest group for engineering students, leadership and service, honors students, or many other options.  

Location

San Antonio is a major city in south-central Texas. It is 70 miles from Austin and 190 from Houston, Texas. There are many things to do in San Antonio, but visiting the River Walk is the most popular. The River Walk is full of great restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. You can explore the full 15 miles by river taxis or go on a boat tour!

The University of Texas at Tyler

Academic Programs

You can choose from one of their 80 undergraduate and graduate programs. Graduate licensure and certification exam rates are 94.9% for nursing and 97.2% for education, higher than any other Texas public university.  

Housing

You can be one of the 1,700 students who live in one of the five residence halls. Residence halls have double or triple rooms. You can also choose a studio or a 1-4 bedroom apartment. 

Location

Tyler is on the eastern side of Texas, with a population of 109,286. One of its most significant city events is the Texas Rose Festival, which over 100,000 people attend.  Tyler is great for Kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking. It has everything a big city offers but is much smaller.  But if you are looking for more, Dallas is only 100 miles away.

The University of Texas at Permian Basin

Academic Programs

UTPD is a small school with a first-year class of about 600. You can choose from one of its 50 undergraduate and graduate programs in STEAM, business, education, and nursing.

Location

Odessa is a small city in western Texas. It has a population of 112,906. If you like to mountain bike, you’re in luck! The city has over 18 miles of trails and many nature trails for joggers. If you are looking for more to do, Lubbock, Texas, is 120 miles away, and El Paso is 240.

The University of Houston – Clear Lake is on the southeast side of Houston. It is within walking distance from NASA and other aerospace companies. As the largest city in Texas, there is much to do, from water sports to museums and the nightlife.

You can choose from one of the 62 undergraduate and graduate degrees offered. The school aims to prepare students for in-demand fields such as cybersecurity.  The U.S. National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security sponsor the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense on campus.
